This is a U.S. Army model Remington Rolling Block Carbine, originally sold to the New York State Militia in 1872 or ’73. At the time, Remington was manufacturing the guns in upstate New York (Illion, NY) and gave the state militia a decent price as well as taking their old cap and ball muskets in as partial trade. There were approximately 15,000 delivered in 1872 and about 4,000 delivered in 1873. It is marked “Regiment D, 65Th. Reg. S.N.Y.”. It has several cartouches on both sides of the buttstock and regiment and unit markings stamped into the buttplate. The rifle is in great condition (considering it’s 154 years old!). These were originally issued in Caliber 50-70 but this one was re-barreled in 1907 to 30-06 (barrel is marked 9-07 with a flaming bomb and Springfield Armory) presumably to update to the current military cartridge of the time. It has an American walnut stock and fore end and has a “22 ½ inch barrel and is “40 inches overall. It has not been sanded or refinished. I have fired it a few times over the years with hand loads and it shoots great. This has been in the safe for about 40 years and it’s time for it to find a new home with someone who appreciates the history and the simple elegance of the Rolling Block Design. Don’t miss out on this great rifle. $1500 FIRM.
