There are a lot of reasons to own, hunt with and shoot a Mauser. They have a well-deserved reputation for strength, reliability and accuracy. On top of that, they’re just a neat piece of history. The design of the Mauser bolt was so good that it’s still in use today.
This particular consignment rifle is a bit unique. It’s a sporterized model that is in great condition and great looking. The owner says that it’s a real shooter as well. He has the scope zero’d at 200 yards. The safety has also been modified to work with the scope as mounted. In the photos we show the safety in both the Safe and Fire modes.
Typically, the manufacturer and date of a Mauser can be determined by the markings on top of the receiver. However, on this rifle, the scope mount covers that area of the receiver. We have not removed the mount to find those markings and are selling it as described. We have included photos to the best of our ability of the various proof marks on the rifle. We have located serial numbers on the barrel, the receiver and the magazine floor plate. All of those numbers match. We did not see a serial number on the bolt or bolt handle.
The bolt action, as expected, is smooth and the lockup is tight. The bore is good, the barrel is bright and the muzzle is in Excellent shape. The metal finish on the barrel is in Very Good condition and is almost entirely intact. The wood is smooth, attractive and in Very Good condition. The trigger has some takeup to a definite wall and then a clean break. A JC Higgins ventilated recoil pad sits at the end of the buttstock and is in Good condition. The attached leather replica sling is in Very Good condition.
The mounted scope is a Bushnell Banner II 1.5-4x. As mentioned earlier, the owner states that the scope is zero’d at 200 yards. The glass is clear and the reticle is crisp. However, the magnification knob did not move for us. We did not force it or otherwise attempt to correct the issue. Magnification is currently set at 4x.
Overall, this is a very attractive and well cared for Mauser. While there may be some questions about exact age and manufacturer, the rifle appears to be a shooter. If you’ve wanted to add a classic Mauser to your collection, this may be the one that checks that box.
